The state of music 2006
Feb. 17, 2006
The world of music has fractured into many genera over the last 50 years. This as I will explain is unprecedented in the history of music.
If we were to look back in time we would see that music was very simple. I refer to ancient times when music was made from simple instruments like sticks and maybe drums. With these simple tools the musician would be limited in the range of sounds that was possible to make. However even at this time it is evident that music is a powerful medium of expression.
I would like to jump back to modern music for a moment. I believe that the wide range of musical genera out there today is a direct relationship to the existence of the internet. Yes, I said internet. With the ability for people to be exposed to all kinds of music not limited by geographical location, the spread an awareness of multiple type of music is possible. Not to say that a 'sense' coming out of New York or Seattle is not possible, but that these new type of music will find their way to more ears fast than in the past. Allowing fans to discover and identify with it.
In my days in high school when I started to identify with music there were only a few kinds. Bassers, Metal, and Alternative. Today these genera's we been split, further refined into small subcategories of music. Metal is broke down into Heavy Metal Dark Metal Gothic. Alternative can be broke down into punk, skate punk. While I should not have to say these these lines can and are crossed I only wish to use these as examples to show my point.
There are those that believe that rock is dead and Hip Hop has taken over, while this very well maybe, I can't help but think about classical music which, even I as an old punk rocker can enjoy. This genera of music is hundreds of years old!
I must also touch on the new delivery methods of media ie satellite radio and the internet.
I wonder if satellite radio will last? I think once the internet is truly wireless and found on all mobil devices with broadband speeds it will challenge satellite radio for supremacy. Now I caution, When this happens it will threaten the satellite media providers and after spending 500Million a year on talent you better bet they will not be willing to let the little old internet get in the way :)
Now I consider this a rough draft on my thesis of the history of music, I feel that it must be published.
